The Pickle Prize

When we at Sheerlund were young, the pickle prize – an old German tradition – was always the very first Christmas present to be unwrapped. After dinner on Christmas Eve at our grandparents’ house, the four of us children would line up (the youngest first) at the closed doors between the dining room and the living room. When Grandmother opened the doors, we would run into the room and surround the Christmas tree, looking for the lone pickle ornament that she had hidden somewhere within the tree’s branches. Whoever found the ornament was presented with a special prize, and everyone gathered round to watch the unwrapping. It was a much-loved ritual that for us signaled the official beginning of the Christmas festivities. (Usually – but not always – the pickle was hidden near the bottom of the tree, so the youngest and smallest of us would be most likely to find it.)
